United Kingdom targeted by Commission for failure to comply with Road Charges Directive

12/02/2020 (Agence Europe)The European Commission asked the United Kingdom on Wednesday 12 February to meet all the requirements of the 'Eurovignette Directive' (1999/62/EC) which sets out principles for the application of road charges by Member States to heavy goods vehicles. In concrete terms, the Commission considers that the heavy goods vehicle fee introduced by the United Kingdom in 2014 is a tax that can only be levied by the Member State of registration. The Commission further noted that, in accordance with the EU-London withdrawal agreement, Community law continues to apply in full to the United Kingdom for the duration of the transitional period provided for in the agreement. As a result, the country may still be subject to infringement proceedings. London now has two months to notify the Commission of implementing measures to comply with the Eurovignette Directive. (DG)
