Commercial vehicle registrations increased by 2.5% in 2019, according to ACEA

Demand for new commercial vehicles in the European Union grew by 2.5% for the whole of 2019, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth, according to a document from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) published on Thursday 23 January.

This growth was observed in the five major markets: Germany (+6.1%), France (+4.3%), the United Kingdom (+3.0%), Italy (+1.9%) and Spain (+0.3%).

This increase was also largely driven by the light commercial vehicle segment (vans). The number of vans in the EU increased by 2.8% compared to 2018 figures, bringing the number of vans to 2.1 million units.

Sales of new commercial vehicles of 16 tonnes and over, new commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and new buses and coaches over 3.5 tonnes increased more modestly by 0.1%, 0.9% and 1.2% respectively.

As in the case of passenger cars (see EUROPE 12405/16), the increase in commercial vehicle registrations was particularly marked in December (+5.7% compared with December 2018).
