24/01/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 24 January, the EU submitted new avenues for unblocking the deadlock still present in the negotiations on fisheries support to the members of the World Trade Organization (WTO). In an effort to compromise, a document states that the European Commission is committed to “strictly defined genuine” definitions of permitted support and to support “prohibitions of subsidies aimed at supporting fishing on the high seas and of subsidies to vessels flying so-called flags of convenience”, EU trade Commissioner Phil Hogan said in Davos on the same day. The Commission also underlines that it will only accept exceptions to sustainability under very limited conditions. It should be recalled that members have given themselves until the ministerial meeting in Nur Sultan (Kazakhstan) in June 2020 to finalise these talks (see EUROPE 12386/9).
