On Tuesday 12 November, the Defence Ministers adopted a list of 13 new projects within the framework of permanent structured cooperation (PESCO). These new projects are in addition to the existing 34 projects.
Five new projects focus on training, covering areas such as cybersecurity, diving, tactics, medicine, and defence against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats. Others focus on strengthening collaborative EU actions and developing capacity at sea, in the air and in space.
Speaking to the press, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, said that there would now be a hiatus in the adoption of new projects and that the focus would be on the implementation of the 47 projects. “The next 2 years will be spent working at full speed on the implementation of projects”, she explained.
Permanent structured cooperation is to be reviewed in 2020.
