Copa-Cogeca’s contribution to EU climate action

On Thursday 19 September, EU agricultural organisations and cooperatives (Copa-Cogeca) presented their contribution to the measures to be taken by the EU to strengthen climate action.

In this way, they hope to contribute to the current climate debate and the discussions of the European Ministers of Agriculture, from 22 to 24 September in Helsinki, on carbon sequestration in soils (see EUROPE 12314/1).

Copa-Cogeca believes that “the EU’s agricultural and forestry sectors have great potential to increase their adaptation and mitigation efforts, reduce their emissions, sequester and store carbon and stimulate the economy in a sustainable way”.

It undertakes to act in several directions: – adaptation: – access to technical progress; – support, through EU legislation, for voluntary measures that promote climate action; – mitigation: – reduction of food waste and implementation of a “farm energy plan”; – amendment of the RED II Directive to oblige Member States to provide farmers with access to the electricity grid and price support; – reducing carbon in the atmosphere (sequestration through market-based credits).
