Mr Juncker validates candidacies of Mr Mircea Pașcu and Ms Simson without assigning them a portfolio

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has decided not to grant a specific portfolio to the two Commissioners appointed by Estonia and Romania, respectively Kadri Simson and Mircea Pașcu, to replace Mr Ansip and Ms Creţu, who have left to take their seats in the European Parliament, the Commission announced on Friday 12 July.

According to the European institution, Mr Juncker noted the "skills" of the two candidates, but considered that the remaining period - until 31 October - was too short to give them a specific portfolio. In a letter addressed to them, he informed them that they would participate in the everyday life and decisions of the College of Commissioners and reminded them of their ethical obligations.

The President of the Commission had already indicated that he did not wish to replace the two commissioners who had decided to take their seats in the European Parliament, justifying his decision with budgetary reasons. But, due to opposition from Estonia and Romania, the EU Council was not unanimous in approving his proposal (see EUROPE 12291/22).

Ms Kadri Simson and Mr Mircea Pașcu will be heard on Wednesday morning, 17 July, by the Conference of Committee Chairs of the Parliament, before a possible confirmation the following day in plenary session. The Parliament is expected to question them on their general profile and knowledge of the EU, rather than grill them on specific topics.
