On Thursday 11 July, the European Commission proposed to adapt the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) to the future Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Framework Programme for the period 2021-2027 (see EUROPE 12238/20).
An independent body of the European Union based in Budapest since 2008, the EIT aims to strengthen Europe's innovation capacity. With a proposed budget of €3 billion, an increase of €600 million (+25%) compared to the Strategic Innovation Agenda for 2014-2020, the EIT will fund the activities of the eight existing Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs).
Two new communities will be created. The first should focus on the cultural and creative sectors from 2022 onwards. The priority area for a second new community will be decided at a later stage for a launch in 2025, the Commission said in a statement.
