On Thursday 11 July, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, and the Commissioner for Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, paid tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, in which more than 8000 men and young people were murdered on 11 July 1995.
“It is our shared duty to always remember Srebrenica, one of the darkest moments of humanity in modern European history”, they stressed in a joint statement, adding that, while remembering, we have the responsibility to firmly anchor peace.
“There is no place for inflammatory rhetoric, for denial, revisionism or the glorification of war criminals. Attempts to rewrite history in Bosnia and Herzegovina or anywhere are unacceptable”, they warned. EU representatives also called for an end to impunity and to overcome the legacies of the past.
Ms Mogherini and Mr Hahn recalled that “the priority is for all the countries’ political leaders to actively work towards the promotion of dialogue and respect”, while the country wishes to join the EU. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
