20/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday, 20 June, European Commission Vice-President for the Euro, Financial Stability, and Financial Services Valdis Dombrovskis officially announced that he was resigning his seat in the European Parliament, which he obtained on 26 May last (see EUROPE 12264/3). “After careful consideration and discussions with President Juncker and Mr Krišjānis Kariņš, Prime Minister of Latvia, I have decided to continue in my role as vice-president for the Juncker Commission,” he announced in a statement. He added that this will ensure the continuity of Latvian representation in the European Commission as well as the continuity of ongoing work in the economic and financial sectors. “Europe needs Valdis”, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker commented on Twitter, applauding his decision. At the beginning of June, Mr Dombrovskis was nominated by his government to be Latvia’s commissioner (see EUROPE 12272/30) for the next European Commission. (MF)
