The Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia), Poland and the Commission – the latter being represented by its President, Jean-Claude Juncker – and the Commissioner for the Energy Union, Maroš Šefčovič, have signed the political roadmap to implement the synchronisation of the Baltic States' electricity networks with the European continental network via Poland.
“Today we can proudly acknowledge that we have accomplished all key milestones and we are now setting the tone of the work for the future up to the end of 2025”, said the President of the European Commission, who stressed the importance of the project for achieving the Energy Union.
This signing ceremony is thus the last act of opening up the “energy island” of the Baltic region, which, for the time being, is still connected to the Russian and Belarusian systems.
This slow integration of the Baltic region into the European network has recently been embodied in the establishment of power lines with Poland (LitPol Link), Sweden (NordBalt) and Finland (Estlink 1 and Estlink 2).
Last March, more than €320 million was announced under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to support the first phase of the investments needed for synchronisation (see EUROPE 12218/20).
