The European Commissioner for Competition, Magrethe Vestager, confirmed her candidacy for the presidency of the European Commission on Thursday 20 June.
"Yes, I am still a candidate, we will see what happens", she explained when she arrived at the top of the ALDE party before the European Council. "I'm not confident, no one should be confident at this time, but I am a candidate. I hope that leaders will hear the call of voters for something new, that they will vote in greater numbers and in different ways", she added, adding that there should be a gender, geographical and generational balance. When asked about her chances, Ms Vestager said: "I don't know, I don't know if anyone knows right now".
And when asked if she would spend the evening by her phone waiting for news, the Danish woman replied that she would sleep.
If she is not sure if she will get the job, Ms Vestager can count on the support of several Liberals. Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom smiled and explained that the summit would be an opportunity for EU leaders to appoint Margarethe Vestager as President of the Commission.
The Luxembourg Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, recalled that he "fully" supported the Dane. "I think she meets all the criteria to be president for the next five years", he explained. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
