13/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – The regulation that will ensure greater transparency and sustainability of scientific risk assessments in the food chain – carried out by EFSA for substances such as pesticides and food additives – was formally adopted by the EU Council on Thursday 13 June. This revised version of the EU's General Food Law had been the subject of an interinstitutional agreement in February (see EUROPE 12192/19). The Regulation provides for the establishment of a European register of all scientific studies commissioned by industry and on which EFSA relies, which will allow analysis of studies by third parties and prevent companies applying for authorisation from concealing unfavourable studies. Confidential information will be protected in duly justified cases and requests for confidential treatment will be assessed by EFSA. This regulation is the response to the European Citizens' Initiative ‘Stop glyphosate’. (AN)
