13/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Union is mobilising an additional €3.5 million in humanitarian aid to help the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and neighbouring countries fight the Ebola epidemic, the European Commission announced. Of this amount, €2.5 million is for Uganda, where the first cases of Ebola were detected this week, and €1 million for South Sudan. In both countries, the funding “is helping with surveillance, work with local communities, and boosting local capacities for these countries to take timely and effective action”, says European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides in a statement. This funding is in addition to the €17 million provided by the EU in response to this crisis since the outbreak of the epidemic in the DRC in August 2018 (see EUROPE 12253/4). (AN)
