On Friday 24 May, the European Commission adopted an implementing regulation to ensure that UAV traffic in the European Union is safe and secure, both in the air and on the ground.
These rules govern in particular the registration of UAV users from 2020 onwards. Member States will also be able to define no-fly zones.
“The EU will now have the most advanced rules worldwide”, said Violeta Bulc, Commissioner for Transport Policy. “It also provides the much needed clarity for the business sector and for drone innovators Europe-wide”, she added.
This implementing act echoes the interinstitutional agreement from 30 November 2017 between representatives of the European Parliament and the former Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the revision of the Statutes of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which contains several provisions on the registration and use of drones (see EUROPE 11916/5). The Commission has already adopted a delegated regulation to regulate the technical standards that drones must meet on 12 March (see EUROPE 12212/40).
