02/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 2 May, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán discussed the possibility of a European Pact for the European elections with Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, in Budapest. In a preliminary interview with the Italian daily newspaper La Stampa, he was of the opinion that Mr Salvini was now the "most important person in Europe" in terms of the migration issue. He was also of the opinion that the European People's Party, the Christian Democratic political family that suspended his own Fidesz party (see EUROPE 12218/8), was "committing suicide" by moving closer to the Left. Mr Salvini visited the border barrier between Hungary and Serbia. "We want a different Europe, one that defends security and stimulates employment, family life, and the Christian identity of the continent", said the Italian, as quoted by ANSA, whose Lega party is leading the polls for the European elections.
