On Thursday, 2 May, the European Commission launched the third selection procedure under the DiscoverEU initiative, which allows 18-year-olds to travel in Europe for free, ideally by train, bus, or ferry but even by plane in certain cases.
A total of 20,000 new passes will be made available to young people who have correctly answered a questionnaire and sufficiently championed their candidacy. To participate in this contest, you must be born between 2 July 2000 and 1 July 2001 and be willing to travel alone or as part of a group of five between 1 August 2019 and 31 January 2020 for a maximum of 30 days. Candidates have until 16 May to apply.
This is the third time that the Commission has organised such a selection procedure, the previous one having enabled 15,000 young people to discover Europe twice in 2018 (total budget: €12 million). The European institution plans to organise two selection procedures in 2019—at the beginning of May and later in the year—for a total of 40,000 vouchers and a total budget of €16 million.
The Commission intends to continue this initiative after 2020, seeing as it has proposed to set aside €700 million of the Erasmus budget for DiscoverEU.
