11/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – Huawei continues to attract attention. While the day before, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Information Policy called them out due to mistrust, the Chinese supplier presented its arguments which were supposed to reassure Europeans at its new cybersecurity centre on 11 April (see EUROPE 12233/25). Sophie Batas, Director of Cybersecurity at Huawei, recalled that at this stage, no backdoors or incidents had been proven. To set the Europeans’ minds at rest, she emphasized that China's intelligence law only applied to companies operating in China, which means that it could not violate the legislation of other countries and that it did not allow manufacturers to implement backdoors. “The data remains in Europe”, she added. Member States must complete their risk assessment, in accordance with the Commission's recommendation, before the end of June 2019 (see EUROPE 12222/23) (SPj)
