European Parliament's Committee on Budgets supports emergency measures for 2019 in case of no-deal Brexit

The European Parliament's Committee on Budgets recommended on Thursday 11 April to approve the proposed emergency regulation providing that payment of funds from the EU general budget to UK recipients may continue until 31 December 2019, if the United Kingdom continues to pay its contributions to the 2019 EU budget.

The objective of this text is to minimise the negative impact of the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU on the EU budget and the implementation of EU policies in the event of a disorderly exit scenario from the country in 2019.

If the United Kingdom does not agree to contribute to the financing of the 2019 budget, as indicated in the proposal for an Emergency Regulation, the Commission will present a draft budget plan in due course in order to remedy the resulting financing gap.

The emergency measures in question, supported (15 votes in favour, one against and one abstention) by the Parliament Budgets Committee in the recommendation presented by Jean Arthuis (ALDE, France), will be voted on next week by the European Parliament, which will meet in plenary in Strasbourg. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
