On Monday 1 April, the European Commission announced the launch of a new public database to facilitate access to information on EU Geographical Indications, including their status, their product specification, and a direct link to the legal basis when they are officially protected.
This database is called ‘eAmbrosia – the EU Geographical Indications registers’.
Development of the database will be carried out in three phases.
For the time being, the database only includes geographical indications (registered designations of origin (AOC) and protected geographical indications) in respect of EU wines.
By summer 2019, the Commission will add geographical indications for spirit drinks.
Finally, by the end of 2019, all agri-food products in the European Union will be part of the ‘eAmbrosia’ database.
This new system will simplify the search for information about Geographical Indications and increase transparency for producers, national authorities and anyone curious about European Geographical Indications.
EU Geographical Indications legally protect more than 3,400 names of products in order to promote their unique characteristics and defend the traditional expertise of their producers.
