Members of the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries are expected, on Thursday 7 March, to call for the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) to be maintained at its current level of 6.4 billion euros in total.
The Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries will vote on 7 March on its position on the future EMFF for the next period of the EU's multiannual financial framework (MFF), adopting the report by Gabriel Mato (EPP, Spain) on this dossier. The plenary vote is scheduled for late March or early April (see EUROPE 12101).
The European Commission has proposed a 5% reduction in this fund to 6.14 billion euros over seven years. However, the members of the Committee on Fisheries, who confirm Parliament's position on the MFF 2021-2027 (see EUROPE 12107), believe in substance that the reduction of the financial envelope represents a threat to the proper conduct of existing projects, but also to the implementation of new challenges, such as the blue economy.
Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries will vote on compromise amendments to give consistency to the 1,100 amendments tabled on the proposal on the future EMFF. The Greens/EFA Group, for example, wants public support for the permanent cessation of fishing activities to end and to give priority to other areas, such as environmental protection and controls.
