01/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – With the re-election of Nigeria's outgoing President confirmed, the EU invited all political parties to work towards the unity of the country on Friday 1 March. "Nigerians have re-elected President Muhammadu Buhari, as confirmed by the announcement of the Independent National Electoral Commission. The results were consistent with the observations of civil society", said the spokeswoman of the European External Action Service in a statement. He added: "It is the responsibility of all parties and candidates to strengthen democracy and unite the country." The EU Election Observation Mission, led by Belgian MEP Maria Arena (S&D), will remain on site to observe the Governor and Assembly of States elections on 9 March, and will make its recommendations (see EUROPE 12202).
