21/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States to the EU (COREPER) approved, at the end of Wednesday 20 February, the text arising from the political agreement made between institutions regarding the proposal amending Directive 2009/73/EC concerning common rules for the natural gas internal market (see EUROPE 12193, 12190). One delegation indicated that it would abstain from voting in the Council regarding formal adoption. The text aims to extend the application of EU gas market rules to pipelines to and from third countries. The objective is also to supervise the controversial Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. The agreement was facilitated by a Franco-German compromise. (LC)
