21/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 20 February, CAN Europe welcomed the vote of the European Parliament Environment Committee that called on the EU to raise its 2030 target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 55% in order to reach zero net emissions by 2050 at the latest. The NGO believes that this would bring Europe closer to what will be necessary in order to keep the global average temperature below 1.5°C, taking into account the latest IPCC report. “The call for raising the EU's 2030 target to 55% is particularly welcome, as it is emission cuts between now and 2030 that will make or break our response to the growing pressure from citizens”, said Wendel Trio, director of the NGO. He added, “If the 1.5°C target is to be met, the EU must reduce its emissions by at least 65% compared to 1990 levels”. (AN)
