15/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, and the European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, announced on Friday 15 February that North Macedonia has formally notified its new name to the EU. “We warmly welcome this historic step, which sets an example of reconciliation for the Western Balkans region and beyond”, they stressed in a statement, congratulating Athens and Skopje on this “major achievement, turning a new page of our common EU future”. When asked about the procedure prior to this notification, a senior official considered that once it was received, “It’s done. There is no EU assessment, decision, conclusions or statement, we notify that the country changed his name.” (see EUROPE 12190). (CG)
