Two Judges and an Advocate General appointed to Court and eight Judges appointed to General Court

On Wednesday 30 January, the Member States' ambassadors to the European Union (Coreper) appointed two judges and an advocate-general to the Court of Justice of the European Union and eight judges to the General Court.

As part of the 2018 partial renewal of the composition of the Court of Justice, Christopher Vajda (United Kingdom) was reappointed as a judge until 6 October 2024, or until an earlier date corresponding to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU.

Allan Rosas (Finland) will resign as a judge of the Court of Justice on 7 October 2019 and be replaced by his compatriot Niilo Jääskinen for the remainder of the term of office, which runs until 6 October 2021.

In addition, Priit Pikamäe (Estonia) was newly appointed as Advocate-General until 6 October 2024.

General Court. As part of the partial renewal of the composition of the General Court, which takes place every three years, the terms of offices of 23 judges will expire on 31 August 2019. In this context, six judges were reappointed for a six-year term of office, starting from 1 September 2019: Mariyana Kancheva (Bulgaria), Alexander Kornezov (Bulgaria), Stéphane Gervasoni (France), Inga Reine (Latvia), Ulf Öberg (Sweden), Fredrik Schalin (Sweden).

As part of the third phase of the reform of the General Court, which provides for the appointment of two judges per Member State (see EUROPE 11341), Laurent Truchot (France) and Mirela Stancu (Romania) were also appointed as judges from 1 September 2019, for terms of office which will end on 31 August 2025 and 31 August 2022 respectively.

Ms Stancu's term of office is shorter than that of the other judges, as Ms Stancu is amongst the judges who have been or will be appointed for a period of three years in order to bring their term of office in line with the end of the term of office of the other judge from the same Member State. Judges may be reappointed.

Further appointments to the Court of Justice and the General Court are expected this year. One judge (Austria) still needs to be appointed in order to complete the 2018 partial renewal of the composition of the Court of Justice. As regards the General Court, 17 judges are due to be appointed in order to complete its 2019 partial renewal. Seven judges also have to be appointed to complete the third phase of the General Court’s reform. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
