01/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European University Association (EUA) welcomed on Thursday 31 January the measures proposed the previous day by the European Commission (see EUROPE 12183) to ensure that Erasmus+ participants staying in the United Kingdom can continue their studies and continue to benefit from the corresponding funding and scholarships in the event of a no-deal Brexit. In its proposal, the Commission states that these measures also apply to young British students studying in one of the 27 other European Union countries, provided that the United Kingdom honours its financial commitments under the EU budget. Without these measures, a no-deal Brexit would have automatically forced students to return early to their home institution. In addition to possible financial and organisational difficulties, such a situation would, according to the EUA, entail the risk that their study period would not be recognised. While the implementation of these measures remains to be determined, the association called on the co-legislators to adopt the Commission's proposal as soon as possible. (DG - intern)
