Regions calls for better account to be taken of demographic developments in regions beyond 2020

27/06/2018 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 26 June, during a Logroño conference, several members of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) reiterated their call for better account to be taken of demographic developments in the future cohesion policy.  They call for specific measures mainly intended for the regions most severely affected by an ageing population and rural depopulation.  Despite changes made in the margins by the Commission in criteria for attributing funding from the structural and investment funds (see EUROPE 12037, 12013), Ramon Luis Valcarel Siso (EPP, Spain), Parliament's Vice President, and several members of the CoR considered that the European Commission’s proposal on the next European budget 2021-2027 does not provide “adequate” answers and ignored Article 174 of the TFEU, which relates to EU territorial harmonisation at regional level.
