27/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 27 June, the European Commission approved German operating aid of €10.7 million to assure the viability of Erfurt-Weimar airport. The measure will allow the airport, which is wholly owned by public capital, to continue to function normally and cover its costs from 2024. The aid comes as part of a strategy to reduce costs and dependence on low-cost airlines. In its assessment, the Commission took account of the use of the infrastructure by the police forces and fire brigades. Noting that the measure would contribute to improving connections and facilitating regional development, but without unduly distorting competition in the single market, the institution found that it was compatible with state aid rules, particularly with the guidelines on state aid to airports and airlines.
