22/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 22 June, Lisbon was proclaimed the European Green Capital for 2020 by European Commissioner Karmenu Vella at a ceremony in Nijmegen (Netherlands), the current holder of the title. The jury was impressed by the measures taken by Lisbon on sustainable urban mobility and the fact that it was the first capital in Europe to sign the New Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change and Energy in 2016, after achieving a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions between 2002 and 2014, reducing energy consumption by 23% and water consumption by 17% between 2007 and 2013. The title of European Green Leaf 2019 went jointly of Cornellà de Llobregat, a city in Catalonia, Spain, and Horst aan de Maas, a city in the province of Linburg, Netherlands. (AN)
