04/10/2017 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Belgium on Wednesday 4 October, calling on it to fully transpose Council Directive 2013/51/Euratom on protection from radioactive substances in drinking water. Member States were required to transpose the Directive by 28 November 2015. The directive establishes requirements relating to the protection of the health of the general public against radioactive substances in water intended for human consumption. It ensures that member states have a framework in place for controlling radioactivity in drinking water and the radiation dose received from the consumption of different forms of drinking water along with arrangements for public information. Belgium now has two months to comply with this obligation or risk being referred to the Court of Justice of the EU. (EH)
