Commission dismisses rumours of disagreement with ECB over Monte dei Paschi rescue

The European Commission is “working with the Italian authorities and with the supervisory authorities to assess the compatibility of the plans of the Italian government” to rescue the bank Monte dei Paschi de Siena with EU rules on State aid, the institution announced on Thursday 23 February.

The Commission was responding to allegations published in the Financial Times (FT) that there was disagreement between it and the ECB, in its capacity as single supervisor of banks. According to...
