07/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - MEDREG is called on to develop Egyptian gas market. Egypt has promising gas natural gas resources and has called on MEDREG (of which it is a member) to help ensure reform of its gas market. MEDREG brings together energy regulators in the Mediterranean and on 4 April took part in a workshop in Cairo, organised by the Egyptian holding company active in the natural gas market (EGAS), which is facing a number of major challenges. MEDREG notes that "Long-term solutions for reforming the gas sector must be implemented, which include restructuring the gas market and adopting a new regulatory framework". It also called for support in developing competitiveness on the Egyptian market. A press release explained that at this event, MEDREG and EGAS had reached an agreement on "identifying a number of action areas to support regulatory reforms of the sector, including the setting up of an independent regulator".
