07/04/2016 (Agence Europe) - European cultural heritage winners unveiled. On Thursday 7 April, the European Commission announced the winners of the 2016 European cultural heritage prize. The United Kingdom and Italy head the list with four projects each, followed by the Netherlands (three prizes) and Belgium, Greece, Portugal and Spain (two prizes each). This prize was launched by the Commission in 2002 and is organised by Europa Nostra and the Federation of Heritage NGOs. It is the highest award in Europe in the field of cultural heritage. Four categories have been opened: conservation; research; service dedicated to conservation and heritage; and education, training and awareness about the heritage sector. During the prize-giving ceremony on 24 May in Madrid (Spain), the Commission will also be revealing the names of the seven main prize-winners who will be receiving €10,000 each. (SPj)
