12/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - Afghanistan WTO accession package ready. On Wednesday 11 November, the WTO working party on Afghanistan agreed by consensus on the terms of the accession of the country to the WTO. The package of texts on the accession will be presented to the trade ministers of the 161 member states for formal adoption at the 10th WTO ministerial conference in Nairobi, Kenya, from 15 to 18 December. Afghanistan and Liberia, whose accession to the WTO is also to be approved in Nairobi, will thus join the 34 of the 48 least developed countries (LDCs) listed by the United Nations as members of the WTO. Afghanistan paved the way for its accession after concluding a bilateral treaty at the WTO with the EU on access to the goods and services market (see EUROPE 11016). Afghanistan first applied to join the WTO in 2004. (EH)
