Agenda on migration and mobility signed with EU

Brussels, 12/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 11 November, the EU and Ethiopia signed a joint declaration on a common agenda for migration and mobility (see EUROPE 11415).

Ethiopia accommodates over 733,000 refugees, which makes it the country in Africa accommodating most refugees, according to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. Ethiopia has over 94 million inhabitants, and is also a country of origin and transit for irregular migration to Europe.

The EU and Ethiopia also want to cooperate on issues such as international protection and the needs of refugees, legal migration and mobility, irregular migration, and migrant trafficking and human smuggling - as well as on development policy. Resources from the trust fund for Africa (see other articles) will be made available to implement concrete action.

The EU has similar declarations with four other African countries - Cape Verde, Morocco, Tunisia and Nigeria. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
