Agreement on illegal civilian firearms trafficking

Brussels, 01/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 29 June, an agreement was found between the Council, the European Parliament and the Commission on the subject of the Commission's proposal for a regulation aimed at implementing the provisions set out in Article 10 of the United Nations Protocol on firearms, the aim of which is to combat illegal trafficking and organised crime. The proposal plans to establish rules of procedure for exporting, importing and the transfer of firearms. Exports of firearms should above all receive clearance with all the necessary information for continuing their transfer and a description of the firearms, their parts, elements and ammunition. This decision, which has still to be formally adopted, will allow the EU to come into line with the UN text, Cecilia Malmström, the relevant commissioner, was pleased to state in a press release. It will also allow progress to be made towards complete ratification, which has been pending since 2002, said Malmström. (S.P./transl.jl)
