Brussels, 13/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - The governments of member states increasingly unwilling to transfer more of their sovereignty to the EU “are failing to see that, every day, they are losing a little more of their sovereignty to other globalisation players”, in particular the emerging economies, stated former German foreign minister Joschka Fischer at a conference organised on 12 January by the Spinelli Group, the action group launched in September 2010 by four MEPs (Guy Verhofstadt, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Isabelle Durant and Sylvie Goulard) to counter the resurgence of nationalism and promote federalism in Europe (see EUROPE 10216). Over the course of the next 10 years, “Europe will have to become more mature, whether it wants to or not” and assume its political and economic responsibilities in a world in ferment, Fischer said. “In my view, the only possible way is (to develop) the United States of Europe. Otherwise, we will lose our sovereignty to others,” he stated. (H.B./transl.rt)
