Brussels, 13/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - With the historic referendum on the self-determination of Southern Sudan taking place (9-15 January), MEP Véronique De Keyser (S&D, Belgium), who is leading the EU electoral observation team, has said that voting has gone off without any problems so far, but that the most important part is still to come. “Hitherto, voting has gone well, in a peaceful, calm atmosphere in both Southern and Northern Sudan … The key process of counting the votes, adding up the results, dealing with complaints and appeals still has to take place. Assessment of the political, media and legal framework is still on-going. We call on people to remain patient and to let those in charge conduct the referendum process right to its conclusion,” she said. Maiya Nedelcheva (EPP, Bulgaria) is heading the Parliament delegation of six MEPs in the observation team. (A.N./transl.rt)
