THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/haiti

29/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - On their return from Port-au-Prince (25-27 June), MEPs Michèle Striffler (EPP), Patrice Tirolien (S&D) and Niccolo Rinaldi (ALDE), expressed concern about the “apparent lack of leadership of local authorities” and the “weak government capacity to conduct the rebuilding process” after the earthquake on 12 January 2010. They call on the Haitian authorities to find a swift solution for taking in those left homeless after the earthquake, and who have found refuge in makeshift camps in public areas. The three MEPs also regret that discussion is still ongoing on the mandate and the competences of the interim commission for reconstruction in Haiti (CIRH), decided during the international donors conference in New York on 31 March.
