Scientific assessment of health claims for foods will not be completed by deadline

Brussels, 14/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 14 July, the European Commission formally confirmed that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) would not be able to meet the 31 January 2010 deadline set for evaluating all submitted health claims for foodstuffs. The reason is the unexpectedly high number of claims to be processed.

To be legal, claims that foodstuffs are good for health have to be approved by an EFSA opinion following scientific assessment. This is the procedure imposed...
