Jerzy Buzek elected twenty-eighth President of European Parliament

Strasbourg, 14/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - Following the vote which delivered the widely expected result, former Polish Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek became the 28th President of the European Parliament on Tuesday 14 July. Buzek, the first Central European to hold this post, received 555 votes (far in excess of the 323 required for an absolute majority), with the only other candidate, Swedish Left (Vänsterpartiet) MEP Eva-Britt Svensson garnering 89.
