08/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The EU has congratulated Asif Ali Zardari on his election as President of Pakistan. In a French Presidency statement on 6 September, the EU said it was confident of “Pakistan's determination to continue on the road to democracy and respect for the rule of law” and called for tension in the region to be eased. The EU also encouraged Pakistani authorities to work for regional stabilisation and cooperation, and in combating terrorism. (H.B./transl.rt)
