Poland may ratify treaty Tuesday

Brussels, 31/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 1 April, Poland may become the seventh member state of the EU to ratify the Lisbon treaty by way of an agreement made on Saturday 29 march between the government of prime minister Donald Tusk and the conservative opposition led by former prime minister, Jaroslaw Kaczunski. The “”Law and Justice” party (PiS) is the main opposition at the Sejm and was calling for the ratification law to stipulate that the numerous exemptions negotiated by Poland during the IGC could not be questioned by the Polish government without the preliminary agreement of the parliament and Polish president. He also requested that the absolute primacy of the Polish constitution prevails over the EU treaty (EUROPE 9624). The compromise announced on Saturday by Mr Tusk at the end of a meeting with president Lech Kaczunski (also in the PiS), stipulates that the Polish parliament also adopts a resolution when the Lisbon treaty law is adopted, which clarifies the need to protect Polish sovereignty. The ratification law will also be accompanied by an amendment to be prepared later, which will lay down the modalities for cooperation between the movement, parliament and the president of the republic in dossiers related to the European Union. Opposition support for the treaty is indispensable, given that the government does not have a two thirds majority needed to ratify the text through parliament. So far six countries have already ratified the Lisbon treaty: Hungary, France, Slovenia, Malta, Romania and Bulgaria. (H.B.)
