UNHCR calls on EU to harmonise asylum systems

Brussels, 31/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, stressed the need on Wednesday 26 March 2008 for a harmonised asylum system in European Union countries. Guterres, meeting with senior Slovenian Presidency officials in Ljubljana, said current inconsistencies between national asylum systems compelled people to move around the EU in search of protection, explains a press release. When up to 90% of Iraqis seeking asylum in Sweden are recognised and zero percent get protection in Greece, they will move accordingly, Guterres explained. The lack of a harmonised asylum system encouraged asylum seekers to disappear from one country and move on to another, he added. The high commissioner called for swift harmonisation, but cautioned that the EU should not neglect the quality of the asylum system. (B.C.)
