Beijing wants EU to keep out of Tibet

Brussels, 31/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - China says it is 'strongly dissatisfied' with the discussion by EU foreign ministers about Tibet at their meeting in Brdo, Slovenia, on 28 March 2008 (see EUROPE 9631). 'The Tibet issue is completely China's internal affair. No foreign countries or international organisations have the right to interfere in it,' said a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry on Sunday 30 March. 'We strongly hope the EU and its member states will make a clear distinction between right and wrong, explicitly condemn the violent crimes of beating, smashing, looting and burning and all those offenders, and avoiding taking double standards,' added the spokesperson, noting: 'The EU should not rub salt into the wounds of the innocent victims of the Lhasa riots on 14 March and send a wrong signal to the international community and the Dalai clique, and encourage the Tibetan secessionists in their violent crimes.'
