Forced vote at Slovak parliament?

Brussels, 31/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - On 29 March, Slovak prime minister, Robert Fico, affirmed that he was prepared to take the risk to subject the Lisbon treaty ratification law to the Slovak parliament, even without the preliminary agreement of the opposition. The latter does, in principle, support the treaty but would subject its green light to obtaining a compromise with the government on a new media bill. After two months blockage and no compromise in sight, the government appears set on going ahead with the vote on the treaty, which needs at least some of the opposition votes (a majority of three fifths is necessary at parliament, which counts 150 members, 85 of whom support the government. Mr Fico declared, “We will not wait for a majority in the parliament anymore. If the Lisbon treaty is not passed, the, I am very sorry, but will know who is responsible for that situation…the opposition cannot expect that we do not have the courage to proceed with the vote on the Lisbon treaty”.
