Brussels, 31/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - Although at Bangkok, delegates from the entire world met up (31 March-4 April) for another UN round of negotiations on climate change after 2012, to be concluded in 2009, it was in Brussels that the European Parliament's temporary committee, chaired by Guido Sacconi (PES, Italy) will meet on 1 April to adopt its interim report.
Karl-Heinz Florenz (EPP, Germany) draft the report, “Scientific facts on climate change - data and recommendations for political decision-makers”. He will summarise the information gathered by this parliament body over a year's work, backed up by six thematic sessions, in which a broad panel of international experts expressed their opinions.
Set up on 25 April 2007 for 12 months or a maximum of 18 months, the temporary committee on this occasion sought to obtain an extension of its mandate beyond the initial 12 months.
The temporary committee was set up to clarify parliament's commitment to fighting the global phenomenon of climate change and call for an urgent response. Its mandate included coordination of the Parliament's position on international negotiations that follow the initial period of Kyoto Protocol commitments, to draw up as comprehensive an inventory as possible of recent progress and prospects in fighting climate change, analysing and assessing implementation of Community legislation on the matter and formulating, if needs be, recommendations for actions or initiatives to take.
