Eurojust hooks up to Schengen database

Brussels, 19/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - The EU legal cooperation body, Eurojust, was connected to the Schengen Information Service (SIS) on 14 December. This database enables Schengen area member states access to around 17 million items of data on people and property. This connection now allows national Eurojust members to directly access databases from the offices in The Hague, and provide them with valuable information on issuing European arrest warrants and on possible legal conflicts related to the simultaneous granting of warrants. Eurojust regularly extends its cooperation beyond the Schengen area, as for example on 9 November, when it signed an agreement with Croatia for fighting serious forms of crime, often committed by cross-border gangs. Like the agreements already concluded, particularly with Iceland, Norway and Romania, this agreement includes the detachment of a Croat liaison magistrate to Eurojust, and an exchange of personal data information, to facilitate the coordination of investigations and the pursuit of persons in Croatian territory and in one or several member states.
