Brussels, 19/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 17 December, the head of DG Justice, Security and Freedom at the European Commission, Jonathan Faull, informed MEPs on the civil liberties committee at the European Parliament that despite the a minima agreement on the data protection framework agreement in the third pillar, the legislative text was “satisfactory” (EUROPE 9540). Mr Faull, however, did not clarify what the Commission's position was on the possible reopening of negotiations on the texts on which the EP has only been consulted, but which are expected to be subject to co-decision under the terms of the Lisbon Treaty. MEPs would like to delay the definitive adoption of legislative drafts in the third pillar (police and legal cooperation - unanimity at the Council, simple opinion of the Parliament) as well as this decision, so that they can benefit from the codecision mechanism included in the new treaty (EUROPE 9556). Faull pointed out that the Commission wanted as close cooperation as possible with MEPs in view of adopting legislation in the third pillar, even if there is no codecision. He also affirmed that they would try to represent the wishes of Parliament at the Council as best they could. However, Mr Faull did assert that the proposals that are not adopted by the end of 2008 would be tackled under the new Commission. (B.C.)
