Ankara wants swift reform of Article 301 of penal code so as not to block accession negotiations

Brussels, 07/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 6 November, scarcely a few hours after publication of the European Commission's regular report (EUROPE 9537), the Turkish government announced that it was going to amend Article 301 of the penal code under which people can be punished for “insulting Turkishness”. According to the Anatolia press agency, the minister for justice, Mehmet Ali Sahin, affirmed that “several drafts have been prepared on the basis of proposals from civic organisations....
